If you flipped through the New York Times Over the weekend, you may still feel unsettled by a disturbing story about Candida auris, a mysterious mushroom that threatens people with weakened immune systems and headaches in hospitals around the world. .
The CDC, which recently added C. auris to a list of germs considered an "urgent threat," has a wealth of updated tracking data on its website, where the fungus has been reported and spread. According to the agency, C. auris can cause serious illness in hospitalized patients and can remain on surfaces in health facilities, allowing it to spread between patients. What makes it particularly dangerous is its resistance to the main antifungal medications, according to the Time.
According to the CDC, a total of 587 cases of C. auris were reported in the United States at the end of February, and another 30 probable cases were reported. As you can see on the map below, New York, New Jersey and Illinois have seen the greatest number of cases by far – with more than 550 cases between them.
Globally, more than two dozen countries have reported single or multiple cases of Candida auris, affecting all continents accepting Antarctica.
The CDC recommends that laboratories and health facilities with suspected cases immediately contact the CDC – as well as national and local health authorities – for advice. You can find more information here.
