Millions of Californians may soon find themselves under stay-at-home orders once again due to new restrictions announced by Gov. Gavin Newsom.
The new order comes as the state sees a record increase in new cases and hospitalizations expected to overwhelm hospitals by Christmas.
The governor’s new home support order will take effect in areas where hospitals feel pressure on the ability to deal with the impending outbreak of Covid-19 patients.
The strict stay-at-home order will take effect when the capacity of the intensive care unit drops to 15%. Under the new plan, California will be divided into five regions: Northern California, Bay Area, Greater Sacramento, San Joaquin Valley, and Southern California.
None of the five regions are currently under the new order, but projections show that four regions will reach this threshold in a day or two, with only the San Francisco Bay area due to remain open until mid-December, has Newsom said at a press conference. .
Newsom acknowledged that the new restrictions, which block many non-essential businesses and operations and ban most travel, will not be well received by some, especially small businesses, outlining several state programs designed to help.
“It’s never enough,” he says. “I am aware that we must do more.”
Critical businesses can remain open, but only allow 20% of their capacity. Areas that need to be closed include barber shops and barber shops, bars and breweries, playgrounds, amusement parks and indoor recreation facilities.
California’s Covid-19 crisis shows no signs of slowing down, with the state adding 18,591 more cases on Thursday, bringing the total to 1,264,539.
Surge installations are being prepared to come online at 11 locations from Sacramento to San Diego, Newsom said. The state’s stockpile of personal protective equipment is full.
“We don’t anticipate having to start over,” Newsom said. “There is light at the end of the tunnel. We are a few months away from real progress with the vaccine. We have distribution, we have accessibility, we have availability.”
