Dr Robert Redfield, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, reiterated his advocacy for in-person learning on Wednesday, citing evidence that schools are not a major source of coronavirus transmission.
The comments were raised during an interview with the United States Chamber of Commerce Foundation, as other CDC officials briefed the media on the shorter coronavirus-related quarantine periods.
The CDC has announced two acceptable quarantine periods, although it noted that the 14 days of quarantine previously established were the best way to reduce the risk of the virus spreading. Officials said the quarantine can now end after 10 days without a COVID-19 test, if the person reports no symptoms, or after seven days with a negative test result if the person reports no symptoms.

While Redfield spoke on many topics related to coronaviruses, such as vaccines, mortality and hospitalization statistics and projected timelines, he highlighted his advocacy for in-person learning.
“You know, I was very disappointed in New York when they closed the schools, when they hit their 3% point, because, as you pointed out, we now have substantial data that shows that the face to face learning from schools can be conducted. in K-12, and especially in elementary and middle schools in a safe and responsible manner, ”said Redfield.

Infections among teachers and students occur due to community transmission or the spread of the virus in the home, Redfield said.
“We don’t see any intra-school transmission,” he says.
The CDC director highlighted the benefits of in-person learning, such as socialization, mental health services and food programs, saying that learning at home can, unfortunately, lead to more drug addiction and suicide.
“I just think it’s healthy for these kids to be in school,” he continued. “Having said that, they have to do it safely and they have to do it responsibly. And when it started over the summer, no one really knew for sure. They believed these public health measures would work. But now the data is clearly showing us that you can operate these face-to-face schools in a safe and responsible manner. “
