LINCOLN, Neb. (KOLN) – The Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) has been informed that the COVID-19 vaccine is listed as one of the many causes of an individual’s death in the state.
The individual, a man in his 40s with a number of comorbidities and residing in a long-term care facility, died between 1 and 2 weeks after receiving his first dose of a COVID-19 vaccine .
The death occurred on January 17 and the man received the vaccine in the first week of January.
The death was recorded in VAERS, the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System, a national vaccine safety monitoring program administered by the CDC and the FDA. Whenever a death or an adverse event occurs after vaccination, the case should be reported to VAERS. This process allows the CDC and the FDA to closely monitor and assess any adverse events, for ongoing safety assessments. Just like the standard protocol for any death reported in VAERS, it will be completely reviewed.
Dr. Gary Anthone, Chief Medical Officer of Nebraska, made the following statement:
“Residents of long-term care facilities have become a high priority in the state to get vaccinated, due to the higher death rates in this medically fragile population. We are confident in the safety of the vaccine and understand that there may be questions about such a situation. Typically, deaths from the COVID-19 vaccine can be attributed to anaphylaxis and occur within a relatively short time after vaccine administration, which is why surveillance is carried out. While I cannot speculate on this case, when people die days or weeks after the vaccine has been given, it is more likely due to other underlying factors. It is really important for people who have high risk conditions to consult with their medical provider about the best approach to getting vaccinated. “
