As the United States enters cooler holiday seasons amid the coronavirus pandemic, updated federal health guidelines encourage virtual celebrations and outdoor gatherings to reduce the spread of COVID-19 .
“Attending gatherings to celebrate events and holidays increases your risk of contracting and spreading COVID-19,” says the latest guide. “The safest way to celebrate is virtually, with people who live with you, or outside and at least 6 feet from each other.”
The health agency advised celebrating via video conference with family and friends, watching virtual events, and walking around the community greeting neighbors from a safe distance.

For those considering indoor gatherings, the CDC has issued recommendations for a safer vacation, including vaccinations for all eligible people who have yet to receive vaccines, by adhering to advice on masks, by opening doors and windows to increase air circulation, but also to “have conversations before the time to understand expectations to celebrate together.”
Those who are feeling sick or showing symptoms of COVID-19 should not attend or organize rallies, the CDC added, while also noting travel advice, such as mask requirements on public transport, regardless of whether or the vaccination status.
The updated guidelines coincided with more than 118,000 new daily infections on October 1. with the latest seven-day average for new hospital admissions at 7,600 amid the continued spread of the delta variant.
