Former surgeon general Dr Jerome Adams said on Saturday that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) should expand their mask requirements, amid the rise in COVID-19 variants.

In late June, CDC director Dr Rochelle Walensky said fully vaccinated Americans did not need masks in most public places. Adams said on Saturday that officials would have to admit the statements were “premature.”

“Instead of vaxing it OR masking it, emerging data suggests that the CDC should advise vaxing it AND masking it in areas with [rising] cases and positivity – until we see the numbers go back down, ”Adams mentionned on Twitter. “CDC was well intentioned, but the message was misinterpreted, premature and wrong. Let’s fix it. “

He added: “The earlier the CDC said we messed up and hit the reset button, the better.”

Walensky said on Friday that COVID-19 was “emerging as an unvaccinated pandemic” in the United States. “We are seeing outbreaks in parts of the country that have low immunization coverage because unvaccinated people are at risk,” she said at a press briefing.

Adams, who served under President Donald Trump, said in a Twitter thread that current CDC leaders were making the same mistake he made in leading the pandemic response.

Adams and Dr Anthony Fauci, the country’s top infectious disease scientist, said in March 2020 at the start of the pandemic that masks were not needed.

But the CDC recommended masks by April 2020.
