The new guidelines come as cases of Covid continue to rise across the country. On Wednesday, the United States saw a record number of deaths – 2,800 in a single day – and the toll is expected to intensify ahead of the holidays as more people travel and congregate.

So far, the United States has reported more than 14.2 million cases and at least 277,000 deaths. CDC officials Thursday during a roundtable discussion with Vice President Mike Pence warned that hospitalizations continued to rise and they were very concerned that the healthcare system was overwhelmed.

The CDC issued advice earlier this week urging Americans not to travel for vacation, in an effort to limit transmission.

The agency’s new report includes a number of other public health measures local and state governments can take to help bring the pandemic under control, including issuing policies limiting non-essential indoor gatherings, such as indoor meals; and strengthening of contact tracing efforts.
