Cell phone data would link Proud Boys member to Trump’s White House before Capitol Riot.

Federal law enforcement discovered contact between former President Donald Trump’s White House and a member of the far-right nationalist group the Proud Boys just days before the January 6 riot on Capitol Hill. The FBI obtained “location, cell phone and call recording data” which revealed the information, The New York Times reports, citing an anonymous source who was made aware of the investigation. The FBI was unable to understand what the two discussed and the source did not reveal the names of people on either end of the call.

News of the call comes as the group’s leader, Enrique Tarrio, has confirmed he called Trump associate Roger Stone days before the Capitol assault. Tarrio called during a protest outside Senator Marco Rubio’s house and he put Stone on speakerphone to speak to the protesters. An official said it was not the call in question. This means that two members of the Proud Boys were in contact with people associated with the White House, illustrating how extremist groups had ties to people close to the Trump administration.

Earlier this week, it was reported that federal investigators were examining communications between members of Congress and members of the mob that stormed the Capitol. CNN reported that there had been “contact clues” in the days surrounding January 6. But the New York Times claims so far that there has been “no evidence of communication” between rioters and lawmakers during the attack itself.

At least one person associated with the previous administration is said to have participated in the riot. A former State Department aide, Federico Klein, was arrested Thursday for participating in the riot. Klein thus became the first known Trump official to be charged with crimes related to the Capitol Riot. Videos would show Klein assaulting law enforcement officers with a stolen riot shield. Prosecutors had requested that Klein be detained before trial, but the judge set a bail hearing for Tuesday.
