Boston Celtics leader Bob Cousy received President Donald Trump's Presidential Freedom Medal on Thursday night.
"If I had known that I was going to praise, I would probably have done the only thing right and I would have died for you," Cousy joked. "I think that at age 91 I have to stop using this line.I think God has heard it once too much."
"This recognition allows me to complete my circle of life and I can stop chasing the bouncing ball," said Cousy. "The Presidential Medal of Freedom allows me to reach a level of acceptance in our society that I have never dreamed of."
Founded by John F. Kennedy in 1963, the Presidential Medal of Freedom is awarded for "a particularly meritorious contribution to the security or national interests of the United States, to peace in the world, to a cultural enterprise or to another significant public or private enterprise ". It is one of the most prestigious and prestigious civil awards.
Cousy, 91, spent the first 13 seasons of his career with the Celtics, helping the team win six titles in the 1950s and 1960s. He was a 13-time all-star player with the Celtics, won the award MVP in 1957 and formed 12 teams All-NBA. The Celtics retired his jersey in 1963 after his last season with the team. He was inducted into the 1971 Basketball Hall of Fame.
