The government said Thursday that Zydus Cadila’s locally developed needle-free Covid-19 vaccine, ZyCoV-D, would be introduced in the national coronavirus vaccination campaign very soon and would be priced differently than jabs currently in use.

As to the price at which it will be purchased, Union Health Secretary Rajesh Bhushan told a press conference that the government is in talks with the manufacturer.

“As to the price of the vaccine that it will be purchased for, we are in discussions with the manufacturer. As it is a three dose vaccine and comes with a needleless delivery system, it would have a different price than the existing vaccines that are used in the Covid vaccination program, “he said.

“It will be introduced very soon in the vaccination campaign against Covid-19”, added Bhushan.

Regarding the WHO authorization for Covaxin, the Director General of the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), Dr Balram Bhargava, said: “We know that the scientific data, the public health considerations and international health requirements are all taken into account for which authorization is given by WHO. All of these have been provided and are under review. The World Health Organization will decide accordingly. “

ZyCoV-D has been approved for emergency use by the Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI) and will be administered to persons aged 12 years and over.

The Covishield, Covaxin, and Sputnik V vaccines are only given to people over the age of 18 and unlike ZyCoV-D, which is a three-dose vaccine, they are given in two doses.

The Department of Biotechnology (DBT) previously stated that ZyCoV-D is the world’s first DNA-based vaccine against the coronavirus and, when injected into the human body, produces the spike protein of the SARS- virus. CoV-2 and triggers an immune response, which plays a vital role in protection against disease as well as in viral clearance.
