INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – Fibroids can be devastating and, in the worst case, be life threatening. After countless fibroids and seven surgeries, a woman in central Indiana has been brought back to life.
Shellie Canady’s fibroid journey began in 1995, not achieving relief until 16 years later. She remembers her mother having them so she would know what they were. But getting rid of them and rebuilding her body was a journey she never saw coming. And now she’s sharing her story in hopes of sparing someone else.
“I ended up having a biliary obstruction because all of the scar tissue wrapped around my intestines,” Canady said. “So they must have removed about 18 inches from my intestines.”
This is what happened during Canady’s seventh surgery to repair the damage caused by fibroids over the years. On a mission to save her uterus to one day give birth to children, she underwent the first surgery in 1995.
“A few years later, I mean in the early 2000s, they came back in force. And so I had to have another myomectomy in 2002, ”she said.
It also didn’t work, so in 2004 she tried a new surgery where doctors went through her leg and thigh to cut off the blood supply to the fibroids.
Again, it didn’t work. The fibroids coming back worse than before, she gave up the dream of having children.
“I’m still a mom. I adopted my daughter when she was five years old. And she is now 25 years old. So that’s great. And I am a teacher. So in 25 years I have taught more than 500 children. So although I didn’t have children naturally, God blessed me that I could mother children in school and mother my own child, ”Canady said.
In 2007, she opted for a hysterectomy, leaving an ovary behind. This ovary began to produce another type of tumor. It wasn’t fatal this time, but still painful.
“My OB-GYN must have ended up taking my appendix because these tumors went to my appendix,” she said.
After many surgeries, scar tissue wrapped around her intestines, forcing doctors to do one last surgery.
“So yeah, it was a big ordeal,” she said. “But since then, no problem.”
For Canady it was a trip of a lifetime and she hopes sharing her story will help someone else.
