Human remains were found during the search for a missing Wisconsin couple, and their 23-year-old son was arrested in what police called a “suspicious” disappearance.
The Dane County Sheriff’s Office announced the discovery of the remains on Friday, but said the medical examiner’s office had yet to confirm whether they belonged to Bart and Krista Halderson, a Windsor couple who went missing Wednesday morning. An autopsy is scheduled for next weekend.
At a press conference on Friday afternoon, Dane County Sheriff Kalvin Barrett said the remains were found in a rural area on Thursday, the same day the couple’s 23-year-old son, was jailed for allegedly providing false information about a missing person.
Chandler Halderson was the first person to report his parents’ disappearance, telling police on Wednesday that his 50-year-old father and 53-year-old mother had not been seen since July 1, nearly a week ago. He said they planned to spend the July 4 weekend at a Langlade County cabin with an unknown couple.
“They were picked up by their friends, whose name I never had. I assumed it was someone I knew, like their close neighbors down the street, or their best friends on the east side, ”Halderson told police, according to prosecution documents cited by Channel3000. “That’s what I assumed. I haven’t looked into it anymore. They were picked up and left with another couple.
However, police said they found no sign of the couple in the cabin. And as the search continued, authorities said they were left with many “unanswered questions” about the couple’s whereabouts. Their son, however, told local media that he thought “maybe they are in a casino, their phones off, no reception. Maybe they’re on a boat, having fun with their friends.
On Thursday evening, he was charged with providing false information about a missing person and was held in Dane County Jail.
The authorities have made no secret of the fact that they consider the case to be something more sinister than a simple case of missing persons.
“We certainly have suspicions as to what really happened,” a spokesperson for the Dane County Sheriff’s Office said Thursday evening.
Police have been quiet about aspects of the 23-year-old’s story that they believe are false. When asked on Friday to elaborate, Barrett only said that “the arrest was based on his providing false information about a missing person.”
Details were also scarce on the exact location where the human remains were found on Thursday and what parts of the body were unearthed. Barrett said talks with “friends, family and neighbors” of the missing couple led police to the area where the remains were found, but he declined to provide further details, citing the investigation as Classes.
The couple’s extended family released a statement thanking authorities for their work on the case.
