Charles G. Coates, 84, has died at Good Samaritan Health Center, Merrill, after the heroic efforts of Merrill firefighters at his home. He was born March 10, 1937 in Loyal, WI, the son of the late Gordon C. and Delana E. (Hills) Coates. On February 5, 1971, Charles and Kathy Schield married in Waukegan, IL. They celebrated their 50e Wedding anniversary earlier this year. He will be sorely missed. Growing up, Charles lived in many different cities as his father was a lumber yard manager and was sent to different places after the job was done. He attended and graduated from Waterloo High School. Charles then served in the Army Reserve and then joined the Navy where he was part of the drill crew and served on the Yorktown aircraft carrier and had his own radio program called “Morning Melodies”. Upon his return home, Charles worked as a material handler for PDM Bridges. He was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting, trapping and fishing – he even had a small business making fishing lures. Charles had many hobbies, but his favorites were acrylic painting – landscapes and wildlife, in particular – and rockhounding, where he would drop stones until they glowed. Charles was also a writer and charmed Kathy with several poems over the years. He was a passionate and strong man of faith who loved his family and loved to laugh. Charles was a lifelong joker and joker who loved to entertain, cheer on the Packers and have fun…. And drink coffee! He will be sorely missed.

Survivors include his wife of over 50 years: Kathy Coates, Merrill; six children: Carissa “Carrie” (Shannon) Kraucyk, Carla (Chad) Emmer, Joshua Coates, Joel (SamiJo) Coates, Lisa (Brian) Holbrook and Jeff Jajnter; 23 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; three siblings: Calvin (Miriam) Coates, Chari Coates and Wilma Coates. He was predeceased by his parents, his nephew Harvey Scott and a sister, Bertha.

Charles’s funeral will be at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, October 5, 2021 at Hillside Church. Visitations will be from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Monday at Waid Funeral Home and again Tuesday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of church service.
