Tick tock – the time and the bar for the most subscribers on social media platforms are advancing forever.

Charli D’Amelio, the biggest social media star and one of TikTok’s highest earners, this week became the first person to reach over 100 million subscribers on the platform.

The record comes days after the 16-year-old influencer was bombarded with criticism for a controversial video she posted that many viewers found flippant and entitled to and caused her to lose some of her followers – a number that she has now recovered, and then some.

In the initially losing video, Charli has a cringew disagreement with her parents, Marc and Heidi, while eating dinner prepared by her personal chef Aaron May with fellow influencers James Charles and sister Dixie. Charli laments, at one point in the clip, that she has yet to reach 100 million followers – a complaint that has left her fans unrecognized. The video also features Dixie gagging in response to the May snail cooked for the family.

“It’s disgusting how spoiled and disrespectful these girls are,” wrote one commentator.

In response, Charli did not apologize but doubled down to defend his behavior in the video, write on twitter Thursday she “would be back posting normal content with a smile on my face!” At the end of the day, I know I am a good person with a good heart and I will never change that on my own. I love you all!!”

Before crossing the 100 million mark, however, Charli’s subscriber count jumped from 99.5 million before the video to 98.5 million after. James Charles, a beauty sensation on YouTube, defended Charli amid the backlash.

“This situation of Charli does NOT suit me,” he posted on Twitter. “100 million subscribers in a year and you expect her to know how to be a perfect role model?” Death threats because she’s a picky eater and made a joke on a milestone? People 30 and over dragging someone half their age? I feel familiar. “
