MAYVILLE – Two years after dedicating the Mayville Cemetery, the Chautauqua Hometown Heroes Veterans Memorial has been completed. An official space dedication is scheduled for October 5 at 1 p.m.

Led by a group of residents of the Village of Mayville and the Town of Chautauqua, the Chautauqua Hometown Heroes Veterans Memorial Committee recently received its 501c3 status, which allows it to operate as a non-profit organization.

In addition to the belvedere-like structure, the memorial includes commemorative brick walls honoring all of the serving men and women of Chautauqua County, many of whom have received the highest military honor.

According to Jim Kurtz, member of the board of directors of the CHHVM, a special effort is made to honor those missing or killed in action.

“Chautauqua County has 214 veterans who were either MIA or KIA and are buried in a foreign cemetery” Kurtz said. “Our intention in creating this memorial was to provide a place where loved ones could gather to feel their veteran was not forgotten. “

The Chautauqua Region Community Foundation recently awarded a grant from its Region Fund to the CHHVM for the purchase of 50 cenotaph bricks to honor these veterans.

“These brave men and women made the ultimate sacrifice to protect our freedoms”, said Tory Irgang, executive director of the Community Foundation. “It is an honor for us to support the mission of the Chautauqua Hometown Heroes Veterans Memorial to preserve its legacy for future generations. “
