Chicago Shooting: Second suspect charged in the death of retired firefighter Lt. Dwain Williams during attempted hijacking at Morgan Park

CHICAGO (WLS) – A second suspect has been charged in the fatal shooting of retired Chicago Fire Lieutenant Dwain Williams outside a popcorn store in Morgan Park earlier this month.

Dwain Johnson, 18, of Gary was charged with one count of first degree murder as well as vehicle and firearm hijacking, police said on Friday morning. He is due in a bond court on Friday.

Chicago Police said Thursday that a 15-year-old boy had been charged with the shooting.

Williams, a beloved Lleutenant retired CFD, was walking out of a popcorn store in Morgan Park at 117th Street and Western Avenue on December 3. Surveillance video captured the exchange of fire, with Williams and the group trying to approach him. Williams was hit and later died.

Mayor Lightfoot, Chicago Police Discuss Firefighter Death Charges

At a press conference Thursday afternoon, Chicago police said they were looking for two more suspects in the shooting.

Mayor Lori Lightfoot spoke with Williams’ wife Thursday morning about the break in the case.

“As you can imagine, his life is still shattered. There are a lot of tears and I suspect there will be a lot more in the days to come,” Lightfoot said. “It was something that irreparably changed their lives.”

CPD said car hijackings were on the rise this year in the city. The superintendent added that his officers had taken some of those responsible for the crimes off the streets.

“We had an amazing peak, but we made some arrests,” said Chicago Police Director David Brown. “We have to make many more arrests. We are not satisfied and we will not stop pursuing these suspects until they are all captured.”

Family, friends and community said a final goodbye to Lt. Dwain Williams this weekend.

Williams, 65, spent 28 years with the Chicago Fire Department and then worked at OEMC, specializing in coordinating the city’s surveillance cameras.
