Chicago Weather: Snow totals of around a foot are reported in the area as plows begin to clear side streets

CHICAGO (WLS) – The Chicago area is digging Monday after a weekend snowstorm dumped a foot of snow in parts of the area.

Over the weekend, O’Hare Airport recorded 9.9 inches of snow and at least 11 inches of snow at Midway. It was the biggest snowstorm in the Chicago area in over five years.

The snow was wet and heavy, which made it difficult to keep pace on the sidewalks and driveways. Snowplows crossed the main streets, but hours later were covered again.

WATCH: Chunks of ice float in Lake Michigan

Lake Michigan was a sight to see during this weekend’s snowstorm.

Some people came down to film the huge chunks of ice floating on the water.

Tips if you must travel:

  • Take it easy, especially when approaching intersections, ramps, bridges, and shaded areas prone to icing.
  • Make sure your gas tank is full.

  • Keep a cell phone, warm clothes, blankets, food, water, a first aid kit, windshield washer fluid, and an ice scraper in your vehicle.

  • Check the forecast and make sure someone knows your route and schedule.

  • Take a cell phone and dial * 999 in the Chicago area for help in an emergency.

  • Remember: Using cell phones while driving is illegal in Illinois, except in an emergency.

  • If you are involved in an accident, stay inside your vehicle. Getting out of your vehicle into live traffic can have fatal consequences.

  • Always wear a seat belt whether you are sitting in the front or back seat. It’s the law.

    • Residents on the north side build a 15-foot snowman

    Some people on the north side of town made good use of the snow and built this giant snowman.

    An ABC7 photographer said he is around 15 feet tall with children standing in front of him for perspective.
