Children’s hospital sees increase in MISC cases linked to COVID-19

OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) – A COVID warning for young people. The children’s hospital and medical center has its highest number of cases of so-called MISC.

This is the rare and complex virus syndrome that can inflame a child’s heart and other organs.

As vaccinations continue across the country, young people are last on the list. Experts believe the recent rise is linked to travel and vacation gatherings.

For most of the summer, Childrens had two patients per month with MISC. In December, they had 10.

January will surpass that.

Dr Jean Ballweg, pediatric cardiologist at the children’s hospital, said: “We know that over 50% of our pediatric patients have cardiac manifestations of MIS-C and that they are serious. Some of our kids must have been on a heart-lung machine. Many had to be intubated and take IV medicine to support the heart. We have a follow-up program and we will do it for a year after release. I suspect those with heart problems, we will follow indefinitely.

What is really a problem for cardiologists in children is that no one really knows the long term implications of this syndrome.

They want this to be a reminder to stay vigilant to prevent the spread of COVID-19.
