The 145 pilot whales that stranded on an isolated beach in New Zealand died.
However, environmentalists hope to save some of the eight Pygmy orcs who remained stranded on Monday at the other end of the country.
A person pbading on the site discovered Saturday at pilot whales in two groups distant from about 2 km on to Stewart Island. About 75 of them were already dead and environmental advocates decided to sacrifice the others because of their poor state and remote location.
The Island of Stewart, also known as Rakiura, has only about 375 inhabitants. Cetaceans were located in Mason Bay about 35 kilometers from Oban, the main population.
"You feel bad for animals, it's a tragic event," said Ren Leppens, director of operations of Rakiura's Department of Conservation. "It's something you do not want to see, you'd like to understand because the whales fail to be able to intervene."
Leppens said the whales were half buried in the sand and were in poor health, which would indicate that they may have been there for a day. He said the staff had slaughtered the animals and their remains would remain in place for nature to take over.
In the meantime, 10 Pygmy Orcs stranded on Ninety Mile Beach on the North Island were found on Sunday . Two of the specimens are already dead and the staff is planning to return the other eight to the sea.
strandings are relatively common in in New Zealand during the 1980s. summer in the southern hemisphere. It is thought that they may be due to several factors, including escape from predators, diseases or navigational errors.
