During this Wednesday, the Minister of Health, Emilio Santelices, was part of the session of the Health Committee in the Chamber of Deputies, where he revealed that 48% of the total capacity Hospitals are unused.
"That means we have a high cost plane in the hangar, saved half the time," the minister told parliamentarians.
On this subject, the head of the Ministry of Health explained that it should be -mainly- the lack of clinical furniture. However, he added that "we bought the equipment and this will allow us to increase the number of surgeries per year by 400,000, without having incorporated human resources, since these are available."
On the other hand, and according to La Tercera an allocation of 640 surgical rooms, and these 580 are activated and in use. And according to the Ministry of Health, in 2017 the occupation of these spaces has reached only 52%, resulting in the execution of 1,206,506 major and minor surgeries. But, if we consider the available capacity of the pavilions, at least a million more surgeries could have been performed throughout Chile
And that is not all, since this it adds to the lost capacity for the cancellation of scheduled interventions because, according to La Tercera in 2017, 387,925 specialty surgeries were scheduled across the country. But of these, only 89% were created, as just over 43,000 were suspended
