Lioness Zuri attacks the father of her cubs, Nyack, with whom she has lived for eight years in a zoo in Indianapolis. The site investigates the incident.
A lioness killed the father of his three cubs in his cage in an American zoo by suffocating him with his jaw.
Zuri, 12, attacked 10-year-old Nyack. and the workers at the Indianapolis Zoo could not separate them.
Nyack died of asphyxiation
Lions lived in this pen for eight years and had three puppies together in 2015.
In an article on Facebook the Zoo announced that it would do a "deep review" to try to find out what happened.
"Nyack was a beautiful lion and we will miss him a lot," he said.
Workers reported being alerted by "an unusual amount of roar" from the lion cage.
Zuri bit Nyack around his neck and, despite efforts to separate them, the lioness continued to hold him until he stopped moving.
There has never been any aggression between them, according to the release.
"Employees, we develop close ties to animals, so any loss affects us a lot," told Reuters the head of the Indianapolis Zoo, David Hagan.
"For many of us, they are like members of our family."
The zoo claimed that it is not intended to change the way lions are treated.
