The VLT Telescope of the Southern European Observatory captured the star cluster RCW 38 and its surrounding clouds of glowing gas, with dark dust tendrils wrapped across the glowing core from the young star cluster.
The cluster contains hundreds of young, hot and mbadive stars, the same which is about five thousand 500 light-years away, in the constellation of Vela.
The images were taken during tests of the HAWK-I camera, which show the central area of RCW 38 as a bright, blue-tinged area, an area inhabited by several young stars and protostars that are in the process of form.
Although there are images of this same region obtained at visible range wavelengths, these appear starless.
However, infrared observations look through the dust that obscures the view in the optician, which allows capturing the cor azón of this stellar cluster.
