The airline American Airlines announced today that it would stop using sorbets and plastic drink shakers and replace them with biodegradable alternatives.
Starting this month, the airport waiting rooms will serve sherbet and shaker drinks. In addition, American Airlines will begin to use silverware described as "environmentally friendly".
The world's largest airline reported that in November, it will replace plastic shakers on board its planes by bamboo ones. The measure will eliminate more than 32,000 kilos (71,000 pounds) of plastic a year.
Some cities have banned plastic sorbet because they are often not recycled and end up as garbage in landfills and oceans.
Starbucks and other companies recently announced that they would eliminate plastic sorbets and polystyrene cups from their stores by 2020.
