The World Press Photo Foundation is the entity that works on the development and promotion of visual journalism. For this, it organizes an annual contest involving thousands of photographers from around the world.

In this edition, 4,548 photographers from 125 countries participated, presenting 73,044 images. The jury awarded prizes in eight categories to 42 photographers from 22 countries

The winning image of this year was taken by Ronaldo Schemidt and entitled "Crisis in Venezuela"; the photo also won the prize for the best individual photo in the News category of the moment. The picture shows José Víctor Salazar Balza (28), engulfed in the flames, amid fierce clashes between protesters against President Nicolás Maduro and the riot police in Caracas.

The exhibition travels annually in 45 countries around the world and is seen by some 4 million people.In Latin America, only Mexico City, Santiago de Chile, Lima, Quito and Guayaquil are the places of exposure.
