Bogotá.- The Government of Colombia has authorized the use of drones to spray the herbicide into the coca fields in order to eradicate their crop, the authorities reported Tuesday.
The decision was announced the day after Casa Blanca noted that the area devoted to the production of coca in Colombia reached a record 209 000 hectares last year
Outgoing President Juan Manuel Santos has banned the use of aircraft to spray the herbicide three years ago. But on Tuesday, he said that drones fly at lower altitudes than airplanes and that their effectiveness is similar to that of the ground.
He added that Colombia intends to phase out 110,000 hectares of coca this year through forced eradication and crop substitution programs.
