Discover optical fibers, small robots built in cooperation after a natural disaster

The MIT Mediated Matter Group has created a standalone digital manufacturing platform designed to be built quickly after a natural disaster.

These are the cooperative robots Fiberbots: capable of creating extremely sophisticated material structures. . Small robots work in groups to wind the fiberglbad filament and create very strong tubular structures.

The aim of MIT researchers is to enable robots to work in extreme environments and in areas of natural disasters.

Fiberbots were designed as a platform capable of digitally designing and fabricating large scale structures with high spatial resolution.

Taking advantage of mobile manufacturing nodes or robotic agents the Fiberbots. they are designed to adjust on the fly the composition of the material of the structure being built from the information gathered about the environment in which it is built. In addition, these structures can be built in parallel and interlaced to quickly create new habitable structures.

Robots can be moved and use feedback from sensors to control the length and curvature of each tube, according to patterns determined by a specific protocol design, adapted to environmental conditions.

The Mediated Matter Group has created a team of 16 robots, as well as the design platform that controls them. The team was created within MIT itself and has a regional capacity allowing the construction of structures with a height of 4.5 meters. The researchers created an outdoor structure on the MIT campus, resisting the harsh winter months of Mbadachusetts. This is so that they hope to demonstrate the potential of this technology to create structures in difficult access environments.

Fiberbots allow the digital fabrication of structural materials; generate products and objects larger than their own size; and by proposing new manufacturing processes such as robotic printing and freeform printing. Through detection and cooperative operation, systems can become more responsive and better adapted to environmental conditions.

Each Fiberbot consists of a flexible and sinuous arm, supported by a motorized base. The arm is connected to a reservoir in the base that contains fibers and resin. The robots take the material into the tank with the arm and mix it into their injectors, creating a filament that revolves around the Fiberbot system. The robot then uses ultraviolet light which solidifies the fiberglbad filament and moves it with small wheels to develop the construction, thanks to a small electric motor.

As MIT explains in a press release, the research seeks to distance itself. traditional methods uniaxial manufacturing, developing manufacturing units capable of communicating a lot. The institution aims to demonstrate that its research is applicable at different scales: from the micro scale to the architectural scale.

The project was developed by the MIT Media Lab mediation group, which focuses on researchers: Markus Kayser, Levi Cai, Christoph Bader, Sara Falcone, Nbadia Inglessis, Barrak Darweesh, João Costa and Neri Oxman ( founding director). 19659022] // callback function
