In the magazine Antiquity researchers from the University of Haifa published a study where a group of archaeologists made a ] incredible discovery because they found a representation of Jesus Christ dating from the sixth century of our era. C, 19459018; this image differs extremely from the known portrait of the Christian community.
The image of the strange version of Jesus Christ was found in the Negev desert, south of Israel, on the wall of an old church located in Shivta.
On the image, we can see the face of Christ with long nose, short curly hair, large eyes and beardless . According to the study next to this image of Jesus we see another face a little longer although it is less visible than the first picture described.
Apparently, this set of images is only fragments. of a larger work which could represent John the Baptist with Jesus, when he was baptized by his cousin.
According to researchers, at the beginning of Byzantine art the depiction of Christ with short, curly hair was the one that was commonly known in Egypt and in the Mediterranean Levant, where are today Syria and Palestine. However, this representation disappeared with time.
According to archaeologists, this new and incredible discovery can change and increase knowledge about early Christian art of this region.
