The elected President of Colombia Iván Duque invited other countries to leave the Union of South American Nations ( Unasur ) to be became an "accomplice of the Venezuelan dictatorship" and to strengthen the Organization of American States (OAS).
Iván Duque made these statements to the press after meeting in Washington with OAS Secretary Luis Almagro. "I have expressed (in Almagro) my desire to continue to strengthen the inter-American system and, in this sense, we must advance many countries of South America, by inviting first the withdrawal of our countries. " Unasur was really an organization that became an accomplice of the Venezuelan dictatorship, "said the Colombian president.
" And part of the strengthening of the inter-American system is to exercise this retreat and to strengthen our participation in that organization, strengthen the Democrat as a regional instrument for the promotion and strengthening of democracy, "he added.
In April, six member states of Unasur (Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Chile , Paraguay and Peru) suspended their participation in the organization indefinitely due to disagreements over its operation.
Unasur, based in Quito, is formed by 12 nations of South America and its creation has was promoted, among others, by the late Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez.
During the Duque campaign expressed his desire that Colombia left Unasur to be "a kind of silent accomplice of the Venezuelan dictatorship. "
