Latin Americans are dissatisfied with their democracies

Less and less happy. Latinos are unhappy with the situation in their countries and are inclined to authoritarian governments. This is what the Latinobarómetro study of 2018, a company that measures public opinion in the region, says. The discouragement of citizens across the Americas has several explanations: economic problems, crime, lack of trust in politicians and corruption. According to the report, income, job stability, social security, violence and the fear of being a victim are the main concerns of Latinos. In no country in the region, there is a satisfied majority, only three are on the verge of having a satisfied citizen out of two: Uruguay, with 47%; Costa Rica, with 45%; and Chile, with 42%. But, furthermore, the study reveals that there is a "decline" of democracy in the region that can lead to "democratic diabetes". That is to say that there are indifferent citizens who abandon the collective to take refuge in their individualism, reject the established and break the stratagems, says the document. These disillusioned and frustrated governments, ideologies and democracy are at the root of the birth of populism in the region, which is not new and has been developing for years. Think of Ecuador during the Correísta decade, Venezuela of Chavez and Maduro, or Nicaragua, trapped by the government of Daniel Ortega. In the latter two countries, the supporters of these regimes are mainly people who do not support democracy. These are democracies fractured by the internal political division, warns the study. But can democracy be an instrument of fire between government and opposition? Or should it be a concept that transcends governments, parties of the day, universal in all types of groups of society ?, asks the regional report. The warning may be to pay attention to the Democrats' struggle against the authoritarian at a time when there are no weapons or military boots in the region. (O)
