Fabiola Muñoz Minister of the Environment, said that by 2021, plastic bags of first use will no longer be used, neither tecnopor and sorbets will be used to avoid damaging the environment.

This was declared by Muñoz after the Andean, Amazonian and Afro-Peruvian Peoples Committee, Environment and Ecology of Congress approved on June 5 the notice prohibiting the use of plastic bags for single use

The official recalled that his industry had originally proposed a six-month period for the disposal of plastic bags on the market Peruvian. He added that he hoped that this initiative could be debated and approved by the plenary of the Congress, once the legislature begins.

"We understood that six months was a very short period and we managed to agree with members of Congress and industry sectors to replace the first six months for three years." That means that since 1921 the first-use plastic bags or technopor will no longer be used, "he said in an interview with Gestión.

Muñoz also indicated that his sector promotes a shift in consumption towards a recyclable material, such as plastic bottles, and thus contributes to the formalization of the recycling industry. He explained that it was agreed that the industry would gradually produce plastic bottles containing at least 25% recycled materials.

"We hope that over time, the production of plastic bottles will reach 100% recycled materials." Finally, the Minister of the Environment pointed out that after the adoption of the initiative in parliament, the use of plastic bags in the protected natural areas will be established.Similarly, it will be expected that in all public institutions the use of sorbets is also eliminated.

"Our concern is the use of alternatives that will be bags of more than one use. In the case of sherbets, for example, paper or metal can be used in hospitals. That's part of the change, "he said

What is this initiative about?

If this bill is approved by the entire Congress, it will begin to prohibit the acquisition and use of plastic bags beams and containers of technopor in protected natural areas, heritage sites, museums and state entities. In addition, the delivery of bags in print advertising, newspapers, magazines and other press formats will be limited.

The manufacture, import, distribution, delivery, marketing and use of technopor containers, bags of more than 900 cm2 and sherbets (except for medical use) are prohibited in a period of 180 days. Its authorization will also be prohibited the use of sorbets on the beaches.

In the case of supermarkets and businesses, these should be progressively coupled with these regulations and within 36 months of final approval. At this time they will have to replace the bags with polymeric base in reusable or biodegradable.
