Through a video viralised by social networks, a Haitian citizen reported being accused of an unjustified robbery in a branch of the Lider supermarket in the capital.
The record was recorded Wednesday, July 25 at the branch located at the intersection of Matucana with Mapocho, in downtown Santiago, and two Haitian citizens can be seen. One of them, identified as Pierre, was accused by a store guard of having entered to rob, while the other helped him as a translator. .
"She came to shop, went through and did not buy anything." When they left, they grudgingly grabbed him and told him that he had stolen (.. .) They locked them up and when they checked they found nothing. " told the man who was acting as a translator.
To this he added that "he is not a thief, we want justice to be done", since "many Haitians were accused of not knowing how to speak Spanish and do not know how to defend themselves, I think it reaches such a level that the authorities have to do something ".
The video was captured by Neida Robles, president of the union of Lider workers, who, in a conversation with BioBioChile, said the Haitian citizen "went to the supermarket to buy chips or chocolate."
"He came in and went through the corridors but did not not found what he wanted and left without buying anything . At that time, there was another person who stole and this guard, I think he confused them, caught the Haitian, but did not do the procedure properly " he added.
As part of this procedure, Robles explained that "he took it and locked it in the office. Once it was verified that it was not him, when they realized by the videos, they warned him and released the Haitian but he was already very bad because he felt very humiliated.
Lider Response
From the supermarket, they issued a public statement in which they regretted the fact and clbadified it as a "mistake".
"The situation does not represent in any way the values of the company, so that once the known facts, the exterior guard which provided services in the premises was detached ", they said.
To this they added that they made contact with the affected person to offer him "personally our support" and they also stressed that "we are working to rebuild the trusts".
