Berlin, November 12 (EFE) .- The leader of the Bavarian Christian Social Union (CSU) and German Minister of the Interior, Horst Seehofer, announced today that he would leave the presidency of his party, but that he would continue to hold the post of minister after the media published last night that he would step down from office.
"I'm going to leave my post of president of the CSU, the decision is made," said the social-Christian leader, adding that this did not affect his position as Minister of the Interior.
He was grateful for this "long period" of ten years during which he was able to preside over his party – at the request of the CDU (Christian Democratic Union) of Chancellor Angela Merkel – post he qualified of "exciting and substantial".
Seehofer, who made these remarks at the inauguration in Bautzen (east) of a cooperation center of the Federal Police and the Federal State of Saxony, said the precise date on which he would leave the post always depends on some conversations, but that will be communicated throughout this week.
"Changes are part of life," he added, but stressed, "I am the Minister of the Interior and I will continue to practice as such."
He stated that he did not confirm or deny anything by referring to the information published by the media and that would have been based, he recalled, in sources present last night during the meeting. a meeting of the Social Christian Dome.
"Personally, I did not say anything yesterday after the meeting," he said.
Seehofer had already announced last July his intention to "make available" his functions as president of the CSU and Minister of the Interior in the midst of the internal conflict in the conservative bloc of the Chancellor, although it was discarded later by achieving a hardening of power. the migration policy that in practice was not such.
In the meantime, the Foreign Minister announced on October 29 that he would not choose his re-election as head of the CDU, which he had chaired since 2000, and that he would not be presented to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. the end of the current term of office of Parliament in 2021.
Merkel made this announcement in the aftermath of the elections in the federal state of Hesse, in which his party, although it remains the most voted force, lost more than ten points.
Christians in the Seehofer suffered a similar setback two weeks earlier in the Bavarian elections, when they lost their traditional absolute majority.
The results of both elections were interpreted at the federal level as a direct consequence of the persistent internal conflicts within the grand governing coalition, integrated by the conservative bloc between the CDU and the CSU and by the Social Democrats and formed in March after an arduous negotiation process.
