Sony presents its new 48 mpx IMX586 sensor for smartphones

Sony has unveiled not only the possible camera sensor that should now feature in its high-end range, but also one of the protagonists of the smartphone cameras we will see next year. We are talking about the new IMX586 sensor, a component capable of capturing up to 48 MP. What does it bring to users?

Shortly after this weekend, we found the new images of what would be the Sony Xperia XZ3, which would have a design very similar to the Sony Xperia XZ2, the Japanese brand has given one of their weapons to return to the top of the podium of the best – selling phones of the year. Nowadays, cameras are something that companies are trying to entice users, and Sony has always specialized in this area. Now he wants to keep moving forward with a 48MP image sensor that has been christened IMX586.

According to the brand, the IMX586 sensor has the smallest pixel size in the world, reaching 0.8 μm, so it is possible to achieve the amount of 48 effective megapixels in a 1/2 type unit. This, explained in more "mundane" concepts means that the cameras of our smartphones will almost touch with the fingers the quality offered by the professional cameras and capture high resolution images with a smartphone.

As this picture shows, the difference with a 12 MP sensor is obvious because when the captured image with the 48 MP sensor is increased, the picture is much sharper and does not lose details.

More features of the Sony IMX586

Sony explains that this new sensor uses the network of Bayer Quad color filters, where adjacent 2 × 2 pixels come in the same color, this allows a high sensitivity shooting. In this way, during the low-light shooting, the signals of the four adjacent pixels are added, which increases the sensitivity to a level equivalent to that of the 1.6 μm pixels. This produces images with more brightness in dark environments without the ever-annoying picture noise appearing.

Sony's original exposure control technology is also present as the signal processing feature, which allows to generate images with a range higher dynamic four times higher than in other conventional sensors. Even scenes with "burned" and underexposed areas can be captured with minimal reflection or loss of detail in the shadows.

The Sony IMX586 sensor will begin shipping to manufacturers in September of this year, although there is no date for marketing the first smartphones with this new sensor. Most likely, 2019 will be the year we will see these terminals.
