The Starbucks chain announced Monday the elimination of plastic bulbs in its 28,000 coffee shops around the world by 2020, becoming the last company to join a growing global movement against disposable plastic items.

Starbucks confirmed the decision on Twitter after several months of testing including the UK.

The bulbs will be replaced by polypropylene lids with a small opening and a space to drink the contents of the glbad. This model is already used for some cold drinks in the United States and Canada.

Although they are plastic and theoretically recyclable, light bulbs are generally too small to be clbadified and recycled . However, the new plastic plugs are big enough to be captured by the machines says Starbucks.

" Starbucks finally draws a red line and creates a mold that other major brands can follow," said Chris Milne, head of packaging procurement at Starbucks, in a communicated.

Cold drinks (coffee or iced tea) will be delivered automatically with the new lid, without bulb, except for coffee drinks with ice and milk, the frappucino, which will have a straw made of paper or compostable plastic made from starch or " other durable materials ", according to Starbucks.

Mimicking a proposal that already has an effect on many restaurants and cafes, Starbucks has decided that guests can still request a straw if they wish .
