The computer virus "Emotet" was detected last week by the research laboratory of ESET Latinaomérica in Costa Rica; where they recorded at least 100 infections through their telemetry system.

This virus is part of a family of very persistent banking Trojans that spread automatically in the same way as computer worms. This virus spreads through spam campaigns that suggest that the downloaded file is legitimate and harmless.

Virus Can Spread Rapidly in Central America

Victims were infected when they opened infected documents in Word and PDF format. they have been sent as e-mail attachments in the form of invoices, payment notifications, bank account alerts and allegedly belonging to legitimate institutions.

How to protect yourself from these viruses?

"Al be a botnet threat that seeks to steal information from the device … it will be stealthy, which the user will have trouble detecting … unless you check the traffic network, processor consumption of different applications, among other technical characteristics, "said Camilo Gutiérrez, head of ESET Latin America's research laboratory

. Given this warning, Camilo made three recommendations to protect devices

  1. Use of Security Technologies : Have a security application with multiple proactive detection technologies to detect any type of malicious behavior.
  2. Update Application : Keep up-to-date applications, systems and peripherals to correct any vulnerabilities that a cybercriminal can exploit.
  3. Knowledge and Education : It is essential that users know which techniques are used by attackers so be careful not to get infected.

According to ESET, other countries of the American continent such as Mexico, Colombia, Ecuador, Chile and Argentina were also affected.
