About 20 sculptures of anthropomorphic idols and a decorated adobe wall were discovered on the archaeological site of Chan Chan in northern Peru, buried 800 years ago in the largest mud town in America, Monday, the government.
The discovery, which is the oldest evidence of idols found at Chan Chan, was presented by the Minister of Culture, Patricia Balbuena, in the coastal region of La Libertad, located about 560 km north of Lima .
"We found the entrance to an important ceremonial center inside the Chan Chan Citadel (…) and we found wooden idols bearing entrance clay masks and welcome to everyone who enters this center ", Balbuena told reporters on the site.
