EDITING .- The consumption of energy drinks could increase the risk of cardiovascular problems, according to the results of a study published this week on the American Heart Association website.
According to the study, conducted by a team of researchers from the University of Texas Health Sciences Center in Houston, energy drinks compress blood vessels, thus limiting flow of blood to the vital organs.
Endothelial ultrasound – a tissue that covers the inner part of the blood vessels – 44 students "in good health" and non-smokers. This badysis was done before participants drank an energy drink of 0.7 liters and 90 minutes later.
The results showed that the internal diameter of the blood vessels was reduced on average to almost half after ingestion, suggesting an acute deterioration of vascular function. The authors of the research believe that this negative effect on the endothelium could be related to the combination of ingredients containing an energy drink, such as caffeine, taurine and sugar, among others.
More Heart Work With Less Oxygen
Many people, including children, consume energy drinks during exercise, without worrying about the fact that arterial function is at its peak, said Dr. John Higgins, lead author of the study.
Exercise and sports require maximum blood flow so that oxygen can reach cells quickly. But energy drinks reduce the diameter of the blood vessels and limit blood flow and oxygen supply, he added.
This represents "more work for the heart and less oxygen" for this vital organ, which could explain why there have been cases in which children have suffered cardiac arrest after consuming an energy drink Higgins said.
