Which camera is the best between an iPhone X, a Samsung S9 plus and a Huawei P20? – Devices – Technology

The terms of the contest were quite simple: a photographer from EL TIEMPO was taking three high-end mobile phones to test their cameras and see if they fulfilled their promises of perfect portraits. An image would be captured in manual mode, one in automatic mode and one more, in selfi mode.

The chosen ones were the iPhone X, the Samsung Galaxy S9 + and the Huawei P20 . When this test was conducted, the Huawei P20 Pro had not arrived on the domestic market.

The day is up and with promises of rain. Between the bike rides and the eternal pigeons, the photojournalist Juan Manuel Vargas took the task of getting volunteers for the photos.

Portrait Mode

The first two would use the main cameras of the phones, which in all cases are double. In the iPhone X, it is actually two 12 MP sensors, with dual optical stabilization. In the S9 + there is also a dual 12 MP camera, but one of them has a variable aperture diaphragm, between f / 1.5 and f / 2.4. The P20 arrives armed with a 12-megapixel sensor with an aperture of f / 1.8 and a monochromatic sensor of 20 megapixels with an aperture of f / 1.6

One of the street artists of the seventh quarry accepted the challenge. For your photo, we use the maximum of automation available on each device. All three seek to reproduce the Bokeh effect, which blurs the background to accentuate the main element of the image.

Thus, we use the mode & # 39; Portrait & # 39; of the iPhone and the P20 and the & # 39; Selective Focus & # 39; S9 +. The latter displays a bar in which the intensity of the blur can be selected.

Manual Mode

For manual photography, we went to see Mrs. Rosa Sánchez, photographer of the Plaza de Bolívar. The S9 + and P20 have Pro modes that display menus from which it is possible to adjust the speed, focus, ISO and white balance and blacks. The iPhone X has no manual mode, so we use the ProCam application.

Fashion & # 39; Selfi & # 39;

Finally, the time for selfies has arrived. For this, the iPhone X has a 7 MP camera with its own Portrait mode, while Samsung puts 8MP in the S9 +. Much more is the front camera sensor of the P20, which reaches 24 MP, the same as that of the P20 Pro.

To take this picture, this represents one of the most common uses for mobile phone cameras, we resorted to the help of a Brazilian tourist who voluntarily took each phone to photograph with the Vase House as a backdrop.

It is worth mentioning that all three phones have portrait mode in their rear cameras, but since it produces a similar blur to the traditional portrait mode, we have chosen not to use it when it comes of selfies, which were taken in a traditional automatic mode
