Wood exports reached 123 million USD

After five consecutive years of decline, Peruvian exports of the wood subsector showed signs of recovery at the end of 2018, registering a slight 1% growth over the previous year, a total amount of 123 USD. million, according to the forecasts of the Foreign Trade Center (CCEX) of the Lima Chamber of Commerce.

These results could be explained by an increased demand for manufactured products distinguished by their high added value. These include badembled planks for flooring (parquet), wooden furniture, doors and frames.

As it was recalled, between the years 2013-2017, wood exports registered an average annual decline of 5.4%, largely favored by bad practices of illegal logging and timber management

In the first eight months of this year, the sector recorded a positive performance: its overseas shipments reached $ 79 million, or 3% more than during the same period of the preceding year . This would reaffirm that the sector is going through a slow process of recovery started in January 2018.

For the Foreign Trade Center the results of this period are due to the increase in exports of semi-manufactured products , in particular slats and strips for parquet, without badembly, excluding softwoods. In addition, there are opportunities for immediate growth in some sectors, including sawnwood.

In 2017, Peru's timber exports reached US $ 121 million. with a 6% reduction over 2016. In that year, the main wood products exported were: semi-finished products ($ 85 million), which equates to 70% of total exports ; sawn wood ($ 24.4 million), with 20%; and manufactured goods (US $ 12.07 million), with 10%.

At the same time, our main exports of wood are: China with 59 million US dollars, with shipments of slats and friezes for parquet, molded wood and other lumber. Next Mexico (18 million US dollars) with the acquisition of sawn timber, ferule, imbuia and balsa, plywood and other sawn timber; United States (US $ 12 million), with badembled boards for flooring, densified block wood and other wooden furniture.
