Chinese state media pushed aggressive claims of American “propaganda” aimed at Communist “scapegoat” nation ahead of a report by U.S. intelligence agencies on the origins of COVID-19.
Efforts to uncover more information on how the virus first spread continue to face challenges as the Chinese government maintains a tight grip on laboratory records, genomic samples and other data that could shed light on the pandemic. He has also spread disinformation about the United States.
Initial reports were “inconclusive” on the origins of the pandemic, the Washington Post reported this week. However, the Chinese government has continued to reject claims that the report and all subsequent revelations are part of US government “propaganda”.

Beijing-based state-owned China Global Television Network (CGTN) on Wednesday published a number of articles that sought to portray the United States as desperate to be China’s “scapegoat” while simultaneously pushing theories conspiracy that COVID-19 instead originated from laboratories in the United States
China has repeatedly speculated that the United States has disclosed the virus, pointing to Fort Detrick and the University of North Carolina labs as possible sources of COVID. Fort Detrick is a military installation that contains biomedical laboratories that search for viruses like Ebola and smallpox.

The CGTN published a headline saying the US “should” invite the World Health Organization to investigate the labs, while another article bluntly called the US investigation into the origins of COVID-19 a “Propaganda against China”.
Another headline from the daily “First Voice” column pre-empted the report by saying “US spies get it wrong about a lot of things, including COVID-19.”
“The United States says it lacks information from China,” Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin said Wednesday at a daily press conference. “I can tell the United States that this is just an excuse to cover up their intelligence failure to find the origin.”

The US report aims to resolve disputes between intelligence agencies over various theories about the origins of the virus, including the “lab leak” theory that was initially rejected by critics at the start of the pandemic.
A joint WHO-China delegation has already visited the Wuhan Institute of Virology as part of an investigation, but some members of the team have expressed frustration with the lack of access to vital materials.

President Biden had ordered the further investigation after intelligence agencies “merged around two likely scenarios: Two agencies looked into the theory that the virus emerged from human contact with an infected animal, while that a third agency supported the theory of laboratory leaks, “the Post reported.
White House press secretary Jen Psaki said Wednesday that Biden received a classified briefing on the report the day before and the intelligence community was working on an unclassified summary for publication.
