TAIPEI, Taiwan (AP) – China flew more than 30 military jets to Taiwan on Saturday, the second major show of force in as many days.
Taiwan’s Defense Ministry said 39 planes entered the Taiwan Air Defense Identification Zone in two sorties, one by day and one by night. It followed a similar pattern on Friday, when 38 planes flew over the area south of the Autonomous Island.
China claims Taiwan, which lies off its east coast, as its territory. The two separated in 1949 in a civil war in which the Communists took control of mainland China and rival nationalists established a government in Taiwan. The Communist Party celebrated the 72nd anniversary of his reign on Friday.
Taiwanese Prime Minister Su Tseng-chang spoke out against day one thefts on Saturday.
“China has always carried out brutal and barbaric actions to compromise regional peace”, he said as he attended the opening ceremony of a science park in southern Taiwan.
China has frequently sent military planes to the region south of Taiwan for over a year. The 38 and 39 planes on Friday and Saturday were the most in a single day since Taiwan began publishing information about the flights, Taiwan’s central news agency said.
The Defense Ministry said 20 planes participated in the daytime flights on Saturday and 19 more at night. He identified most of them as J-17 and SU-30 fighter jets.
