Chris Eubank Jr has said the news of his fight being canceled was “surreal,” but the middleweight contender is still planning to return to the ring this month.
Eubank Jr was informed on Saturday morning that replacement opponent Anatoly Muratov had not been cleared to fight for medical reasons and the fight should be called off.
The 32-year-old was originally scheduled to face Sven Elbir, who tested positive for Covid-19, and Eubank Jr has revealed his disbelief at the dramatic postponement.
He said Sky Sports News: “Nothing like this has ever happened in my career. First opponent gets Covid, second opponent fails a fight day medical. It’s surreal. It doesn’t feel real.
“Everything happens for a reason and the plan now is to fight in two weeks. We’re still on the way. The plan is still to fight this month, so everything is fine.
“Look, I’m back in the gym tomorrow morning. I’m going to carry on like this never happened and then prepare for the next fight, which will be in a few weeks.
“There are a lot of opponents and it will be a good fight. It will be a good fight.”
Eubank Jr is targeting IBF World Champion Gennadiy Golovkin, but is also expected to receive a mandatory WBA title.
“The plan was and still is to fight in December,” he said. “We have to fight this month, so I can have enough time to rest and then have a new training camp for a fight in December.
“It is vital that I step out this month and fight, because a big name or a world title fight awaits me in December.”
