CHARLOTTE – Running back Christian McCaffrey made a strong comeback when Carolina lost to Kansas City, racking up 151 scrum yards and a pair of touchdowns.
But there is at least a slight reason for concern heading into Monday, as McCaffrey stepped out in the Panthers’ latest offensive. He was shown on TV on the sideline with coaches working on his upper body.
“I don’t know anything about him in terms of injuries,” head coach Matt Rhule said after the game. “I thought Christian was doing a good job, playing us games like he always does.”
After missing the last six weeks with a sprained ankle, McCaffrey has taken 18 carries for 69 yards and a touchdown. He also caught his 10 targets for 82 yards with a receiving touchdown.
“He’s a great player, and great players show up in crucial areas at crucial times – third down, red zone, two minutes, all of that,” Rhule said. “He came to these areas today.”
McCaffrey passed the Panthers in the first half of the game. Quarterback Teddy Bridgewater hit him with a swing pass to the left, and McCaffrey took it for a 7-yard gain. Although McCaffrey’s first inning lost a yard, he ended up running for 18 yards on opening possession. And when the Panthers were fourth and 3 in the red zone, McCaffrey caught a short pass to the Chiefs blitz and easily won a 9-yard TD.
McCaffrey reached the end zone for the second time at the end of the fourth quarter. He converted a third and a second in the red zone with a 6-yard run, but was out of bounds at Kansas City 1. But with 1:55 to go, McCaffrey took over the next bat in the middle and quickly found himself in the end zone. .
While McCaffrey was once again Carolina’s star, Mike Davis was given decent playing time. He finished with five receptions for 34 yards, plus one carry for three yards. He also served as a critical header blocker on several points and on wide receiver Curtis Samuel’s 14-yard score in the second quarter.
“It was really good to have Christian back this week,” Bridgewater said. “He fought for us, he ran hard, he put the ball out of the backfield, picked up some guys in protection, and then when Mike came in Mike made a few plays too. It was good to do. ride these two guys. “
