When Kurt Russell played Santa in Christmas chronicles, there was only one woman who could fill Mrs. Claus’s stockings. Goldie Hawn plays Santa’s wife, and she has a much bigger role in the sequel, The Christmas Chronicles 2. Matt Lieberman, writer of the two Christmas Chronicles movies, spoke with Showbiz Cheat Sheet over the phone about the sequel, which is now available on Netflix. Here’s how Hawn and Russell helped him shape their characters.
Goldie Hawn was a surprise addition to the first “ Christmas Chronicles ”
Hawn’s participation in the sequel somehow gives the first one a surprise Christmas Chronicles. Even Lieberman didn’t know she was going to show up at the end when Santa Claus returned to the North Pole.

“Never in my wildest dreams have we thought [we’d get Hawn]Lieberman said. “I don’t even know if that moment was even in the original script. I don’t remember any more. It was all put together at the last minute. It was beyond our wildest expectations.
A Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn film had a lot to go through
Getting Hawn to appear as a cameo is one thing. Lieberman knew that writing a full movie starring Hawn and Russell had increased the pressure.

“She had no commitment at all to make the second movie when she was placed in the first,” Lieberman said. “So we decided to give it a shot at putting her in this one, but we knew we had to make sense of it, not only because it was her, but it was the first movie that she and Kurt made together.” since At the sea and that it was Mrs. Claus on top of that, we wanted to make the character really meaningful, interesting and cool and have an impact.

“Having Kurt in that role obviously made Christmas Chronicles 1 what it was, ”Lieberman said. “He put himself entirely in Santa Claus. When you sit down with Kurt Russell, the summer maybe two or three months before filming starts and he’s already started growing his beard. You sit down with him and he’s so committed to the role. I told my wife I felt like I was writing Santa’s autobiography with him or something.

So Lieberman took notes on everything Russell wanted to be The Christmas Chronicles 2.
“He had such a definite idea of who he was based on based on a lot of actual mythology and St. Nick,” Lieberman said. “All of his origin story that we were able to include in the movie, a lot of it was from Kurt.” [and] the idea that Mrs. Claus possesses this magical element.
Goldie Hawn also had ideas for “ The Christmas Chronicles 2 ”
Hawn wasn’t as methodical as Russell, but she also made suggestions.
“There are definitely a lot of conversations like, ‘Would she like to see it that way? It just happened. We would still be angry here. We can’t just change our attitude right away, ”Lieberman said.

Russell and Hawn also suggested on the themes of The Christmas Chronicles 2, that Santa Claus and Mrs. Claus never had children. Kate and Jack give them a quick glimpse of what it might be like to have children.
“This idea came through drafts and character thinking with Kurt and Goldie,” Lieberman said. “Last year I sat down with them and [director] Chris [Columbus] and we really thought about who these people are, what motivates them and what is important to them. This is how these ideas entered the story. “
