Throughout Hollywood’s long history of making films about real characters, it is a lingering complaint that actors frequently does not look like the real characters that they represent. For Oppenheimer, on the life of the “father of the atomic bomb”, J. Robert Oppenheimer, director Christopher Nolan seems to dodge these criticisms by frequent collaborator casting Cillian Murphy, who played his scarecrow in Batman begins, as a titular scientist, and the resemblance is quite strange. Universal Pictures has programmed Oppenheimer for release on July 21, 2023, which puts it around the same late-July slot when a lot of The films of Christopher Nolan Have been released (Interstellar was on 07/21/2017, and The dark knight rises was 07/20/2012). Oppenheimer will begin filming in early 2022 on IMAX cameras and with a budget of over $ 100 million. In related news, the Peaky Blinders the movie, also starring Cillian Murphy, was confirmed this week start filming in 18 months (in 2023), after the sixth and final season of the series.

Sometimes we are lucky enough to have bizarre but funny coincidences in the world of film news. For example, we just heard a great news about Christopher Nolan Oppenheimer, which of course centers on a scientist who feared the end of the world. That same week, we also learned that director Joshua Oppenheimer – no connection to J. Robert (we think) – preparing his next film, and it will be a post-apocalyptic musical about the last human family on Earth. Title The end, this will be Oppenheimer’s first narrative feature; he previously directed the Oscar nominated documentaries The act of killing (Certified 95% Fresh) and The gaze of silence (Certified Fresh at 96%). We haven’t seen a lot of historical epics in recent years, but there was a time when they regularly racked up year-end awards and rave reviews. One notable project still underway despite this apparent downward trend, however, is The woman king, about Kingdom of Dahomey in the 18th and 19th centuries, which had an all-female military unit that may have inspired the Dora Milaje in Marvel’s Black Panther. It has been known for a while that the lead role will be played by Viola Davis, and recent weeks have also seen the announcement of other actors like Lashana Lynch (Captain Marvel) and John Boyega as King Ghazo. This week’s overall cast of the film was still filled by three “emerging phenomena” in Jayme Lawson (Bella Real in the next The batman), Hero Fiennnes Tiffin (Ralph Fiennes’ nephew) and Masali Baduza (BBC’s zeros and crosses). The woman king will be led by Gina Prince Bythewood (The old guard, The secret life of bees) for Sony / TriStar.

There are two companies that are now arguably the most identified with horror – namely Blumhouse and A24 – and the types Horror stories produced by these two companies couldn’t be more different either. Blumhouse does “grand concept” horror like Get out, The purge, and The invisible Man, while A24 produces films that are either “indie” or “folk horror” (or both) like The witch, Hereditary, and Midsummer. Emma Stone’s fruit tree production company now collaborates with A24 on a new horror film titled I saw the TV shine about “two outcast teenagers who bond around their shared love of a scary TV show, but the line between TV and reality begins to blur after its mysterious cancellation.” I saw the TV shine will be the second feature film by writer / director Jane Schoenbrun, whose We all go to the World’s Fair (88% Fresh) debuted at the Sundance Film Festival this year.

Pierre Farrelly

To his credit, few people probably could have guessed that Pierre Farrelly, the director of Dumb and even dumber and The Three Stooges, would continue to lead a film that will win three Oscars, including Best Picture, but that’s exactly what it did with Green book (Certified 77% Fresh) in 2018. With that in mind, maybe it shouldn’t be all that surprising that Farrelly is negotiating to lead an English remake of the 2006 French time travel drama Will you be There. This film was about a 60 year old widower in 2006 who has the chance to travel 30 years back in an attempt to prevent the death of his wife in 1976. In the meantime, Farrelly is currently filming The greatest beer race of all time, based on the true story of a man who traveled to Vietnam in 1967 to visit his friends who were actively fighting in the Vietnam War.

You can talk a lot about the comics of the late 1980s and early 1990s, but for the writers and artists who create comics, that all started to change in 1992 when a handful of the most popular young designers came together. are separated from DC and Marvel to form their own company, called Picture comics. One of those Image co-founders was Rob Liefeld, who during his time at Marvel co-created dead Pool. For several years now, Liefeld has been working on getting movie bids for his own creations, and it looks like one of them is finally going to start filming soon. Jake gyllenhaal is now signed to play in Prophet, based on the comic book of the same title by Liefeld, which will be directed by former Marvel Studios stunt coordinator-turned-director Sam hargrave (Extraction, 67% fresh). Gyllenhaal will play John Prophet, “a man conscripted by the Germans towards the end of World War II and subjected to scientific experiments which gave him superhuman strength” (essentially as Captain America, if he was a Nazi) who wakes up 20 years later in 1965. In the comics, John Prophet wears a purple and gold outfit with a haircut that must be seen to be understood, but the look of Jake Gyllenhaal’s movie will likely be different.
