One of the Chicago aldermen faces charges of forgery for a false alleged report that his Audi sedan was stolen in January, police said.

Ald. Proco "Joe" Moreno was arrested and placed in custody on Tuesday night and charged with a charge of fraud for insurance and obstruction of justice, said a Police spokesman at FOX32.

Police announced that on January 4, Moreno, the first division alderman, would have seen his rented black Audi A6 sedan be stolen from his home in Wicker Park. He claimed to be back from a trip and that no one else had access to the car.

However, Moreno's claims were unsuccessful when police found the car in February after seeing a woman driving her, the Chicago Tribune reported.

The woman was initially charged with the crime of driving and driving.

However, Cook County prosecutors dropped the charges after she told the police – and at the Tribune – that Moreno had let her use the car. The woman, identified as Liliya Hrabar, said that she and Moreno went out together from time to time.

An arrest warrant has been issued against Moreno this week.

Moreno, who lost his bid for reelection, is expected to end his term on May 20.

This arrest comes amidst the controversy that Chicago prosecutors have dropped the lawsuit against "Empire" actor Jussie Smollett, accused of having completed a fake police report. Smollett had told the police that he had been a victim of a hate crime. He maintains that his statements were true, but the police claimed to believe that the attack had been organized and that the charges had been fabricated.
