DETROIT (WXYZ) – The city of Detroit has now gone from a “substantial” to “high” transmission rate of COVID-19.
Transmission rates are considered high when there are 100 new cases per week or more per 100,000 people.
Detroit now has 116.5 new weekly cases per 100,000 residents. The Delta variant is responsible for 97.7% of new cases of COVID-19 in the community.
Health experts recommend masks in all indoor public places, even for people who are fully vaccinated.
“Due to the strong community transmission, it is now more important than ever to wear your mask in indoor public places. Detroit has come a long way and we don’t want to go back. We are asking residents to get tested if you think you have been exposed to COVID-19 and get vaccinated, ”said Denise Fair, public health officer for the Detroit Department of Health. “These are emergency public health measures that will limit hospitalizations and deaths.”
About 373,000 residents of Detroit received at least one dose. That’s about 43.9% of Detroit’s population.
