City of Detroit Expands COVID Vaccination to Seniors, Essential Workers

STRAIT – As criticism has grown over the slowness of vaccinations, Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan announced Thursday that the city would expand distribution.

Starting Monday, the TCF Center will begin scheduling appointments for Detroiters over 75 and essential workers in “Group B” – which includes teachers and educators.

Essential workers in Group B will need to provide their employer’s name and last pay stub to verify eligibility.

Residents can call 313-230-0505 to make an appointment. Vaccinations will begin on Wednesday.

When an appointment is scheduled, people will have two appointment dates – one for the first dose and another for the required second dose.

Call center staff will contact each scheduled person before their second appointment to remind them.

For efficiency and convenience, the City recommends that, where possible, eligible same family members or neighbors plan jointly and arrive in the same vehicle.

On Friday, the vaccine will be made available to any Detroit police officer or DDOT bus driver who wishes.

The Detroit Department of Health aims to vaccinate all homeless shelters and senior apartment buildings by the end of February.

The city is working hard to prevent people from lining up to wait for the vaccine.

Who is eligible to receive the TCF vaccine?

• Any resident of Detroit 75 years of age and over
• Any “good neighbor” aged 65 and over who drives a 75-year-old man to the TCF center
• Core workers in Group B, including K-12 teachers and educators

Detailed information on the TCF test site is available on the official Detroit site. As more independent vaccination sites in pharmacies and elsewhere go live in the city, a map of locations will be added to the website.
