Although the families of the victims of the Ghost Ship's fire incident have not yet received justice on Thursday, another case is about to appear in court that will try to hold him accountable more than the two accused, Derick Almena and Max Harris.
Mary Alexander, the family lawyer of the Ghost Ship's fire victims, spoke outside the hearing room after reading the verdicts. While the civil lawsuit of the families is named after Almena and Harris, she also named many other people and entities, including the town of Oakland, the fire department. Oakland, the owners of the building and PG & E.
As reported by KRON 4, Alexander was particularly disappointed by the jury's decisions, while stating that, irrespective of the outcome of this case, his case will definitely be pursued against the other defendants, even those two too.
She says the owners, the Ng family, had "the duty to make this building a safe place, not Harris or Almena."
As reported by KTVU in July, it is unlikely that the civil trial will take place until next year – and PG & E is no longer part of the case because of the bankruptcy of this utility. (Families will have to file individual lawsuits against PG & E during the bankruptcy, if they wish.) Alexander says the civil lawsuit will be held in May.
"I think the goal of these families is justice," Alexander told KTVU. "It's to hold accountable to those who took away the lives of their children."
Meanwhile, Almena will appear in court on October 4 to eventually set a new date for a criminal trial.
