In January 2020, shortly after Williams’ second season – named First Team All-Trinity League that year – his coach connected with Del Alexander whom he had known for years.
This coach explained to the Notre Dame receivers coach that although his father played in Alabama, and although former Mater Dei receivers traditionally moved to nearby USC, Williams was an elite student with important interests and goals outside of football. And that meant the Fighting Irish would be a legitimate option.
A few weeks later, on February 5, Alexander made an offer to Williams. At the time, Notre Dame entered a race for a Top 100 receiver alongside Alabama, Arizona State, Auburn, Cal, Georgia, Kansas, LSU, Michigan, Nebraska, Oregon, Oregon State, Texas, USC and Washington.
Many other offers would surface on the road. But about 10 days before the pandemic forced college football to a halt, Williams planned to travel to South Bend on a college tour that would include Michigan and Ohio State.
His trip to Notre-Dame was initially scheduled for April 9, 2020.
“Notre Dame is an important offer for me,” Williams told Irish Illustrated on March 3, 2020. “I’ve always had my eye on the school. I contacted them several times before they could even start to me. recruit because that’s my interest in school. And they weren’t allowed to answer me. They could send me invitations to camp and all that, but could never answer me.
“Let me tell you that (receiving the offer) was a great feeling considering Notre Dame is one of the most demanding schools when it comes to academics and football together. Also, the Catholic faith there, it’s God-centered, it’s very cool to me.
It was the type of comment we heard from countless perspectives – considerable interest in Notre Dame’s academic offerings. But for Williams, it seemed like the perk was particularly valuable in the eyes of the West Coaster and his family.
“My parents are very, very high on academics,” Williams added in March 2020. “They keep me at a higher level than football for sure. My GPA right now is a 4.23. They want me. see going to high school because football is going to end someday, obviously. If I had an ideal football career you would end football at the age of 30. So they want me to be set for 40 years after that. They want me to have a good degree and a good relationship. They think very hard of Notre Dame, I would say.
“My basic plan is to get my degree in business administration and then get my commercial real estate license. “
Unfortunately, Williams was unable to make these trips to Midwestern programs during their spring camps due to the pandemic. But until the spring of 2020 and until the summer, he accumulated a multitude of offers of additional scholarships.
From March of his sophomore year and all summer, Arkansas, Baylor, Boston College, Duke, FAU, CRF, Florida State, Howard, Miami, Minnesota, Mississippi State, Missouri, NC State, Ohio State, Ole Miss, Penn State, Purdue Extended Offerings, South Carolina, Stanford, TCU, Texas A&M, Utah, Virginia, Virginia Tech, West Virginia and Wisconsin.
He had become one of the first wide receivers in the 2022 class, following in the footsteps of former star receivers from Mater Dei to Bru McCoy and Amon Ra St. Brown.
Williams entered his first year of school with 41 scholarship offers, even though there would have been no California football season last fall.
